Freely based on Schiller?s drama, the opera is about the fight for freedom in the Swiss cantons of Uri, Schwyz and Unterwalden against the tyrannical rule of the Habsburgs, personified by the Landvogt Gessler, whose soldiers harass the populace. When the old man Melchthal is murdered, the Swiss, led by William Tell, swear to liberate their fatherland.
